Hunt calls on govt to monitor whaling
Sunday, February 07, 2010 » 02:18pm
The federal opposition's challenged the government to get a ship on its way to the Southern Ocean so it can monitor the activity of Japanese whalers and protest ships.
It follows the alleged ramming yesterday of the conservationist ship the Bob Barker by Japanese harpoon ship Yushin Maru 3.
Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt says the prime minister and Environment Minister Peter Garrett have reneged on their promise to monitor operations in the Southern Ocean.
Mr Hunt says there needs to be an independent observer on the water in the region.
