Customs ship on possible whaling mission PDF Print E-mail

An Australian Customs ship docked in Hobart is believed to be preparing to head to the Southern Ocean for the whaling season.

Ocean Protector arrived in Hobart last week and is docked at Macquarie Wharf.

A customs spokeswoman says the ship is undergoing routine maintenance.

New Zealand has lashed out at the resumption of Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said Japan was "isolating itself from the international community" by deciding to resume whaling.

"Japan's decision is increasingly out of step with international opinion. It is also entirely disrespectful of the strong concerns expressed by Australian and New Zealand people for whom the Southern Ocean is our neighbourhood," McCully said.

Fisheries minister Michihiko Kano on Tuesday said Japan will send a Fisheries Agency ship for the first time to guard its whalers in the Antarctic Ocean against possible violent protests by anti-whaling groups, implying Japan will continue its "research whaling" this winter.

"We intend to continue to assert our country's thinking," the minister for agriculture, forestry and fisheries told a press conference, referring to complaints by antiwhaling groups and countries that what Japan calls research whaling is a cover for commercial whaling.

Reports out of Japan suggest the government will increase its whaling budget to better protect crew members preparing for this year's Antarctic hunt.

There was a possibility this season's hunt would not go ahead because of obstruction from the militant Sea Shepherd group.

It has been confirmed that no fin whales will be caught in Icelandic waters this year despite a quota for 150 whales having been issued. It was decided in the spring to postpone fin whaling due to the natural catastrophe in Japan, the main market for fin whale meat, and now it has completely been called off.
